How European e-vignettes work

A plain-language overview of time-based digital vignettes, plate registration and enforcement cameras.

Many Central and Eastern European countries charge for motorway (or wider road) access with a time-based e-vignette. Instead of a paper ticket at every gantry, you register a vehicle for a period and roadside cameras check the plate.

Core idea

The vignette authorises a specific vehicle — identified mainly by licence plate — to use a defined network during a validity window.

What differs by country

  • Which roads are covered
  • Vehicle categories and trailer rules
  • Available validity products
  • Whether VIN is required

What stays the same

Wrong plate data, wrong category or driving before validity starts are common reasons for fines. Always confirm details with the national operator listed in each country guide.
