Switzerland e-vignette — everything you need to know

Driving through Switzerland by car is a great way to explore the country and its people at your own pace. To use the motorways and expressways legally you need a valid e-vignette. At VignettePortal you buy your digital vignette for Switzerland quickly, securely and without any waiting time — the confirmation usually arrives by email within 15–30 minutes.

Our e-vignette is linked directly to your vehicle's licence plate and registered with the operator Federal Customs Office. There is no waiting period — the vignette is valid immediately from the start date you choose. You receive a PDF confirmation with the plate number, validity period and all relevant information.

How does the electronic vignette for Switzerland work?

The digital vignette is a convenient, paperless solution. After purchase, your vehicle is automatically registered in the Federal Customs Office toll system. Fixed and mobile cameras read the licence plate and match it against the database — a physical sticker is not required.

You only need to keep the electronic confirmation handy (on your smartphone or as a print-out). The vignette is valid from the date you choose for the selected period.

How to buy the vignette online — step by step

  • 1. Configure: Choose the vehicle type, validity period and start date.
  • 2. Enter data: Enter the licence plate and country of registration. Pay careful attention to the spelling — incorrect data can invalidate the vignette.
  • 3. Pay securely: Pay quickly and encrypted by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay via our payment providers.
  • 4. Receive confirmation: You'll receive a PDF confirmation by email within about 15–30 minutes.

Who needs a vignette for Switzerland?

A vignette is required for all vehicles up to 3.5 t gross weight that use toll motorways and expressways in Switzerland. This applies in particular to passenger cars, motorhomes, vans and small commercial vehicles. Heavier vehicles usually have separate toll systems (e.g. GO-Box / OBU).

How much does the vignette cost and what penalties apply?

Prices depend on the vehicle category and the validity period. The final price shown is the amount you actually pay — without hidden costs.

Anyone driving without a valid vignette risks significant fines. We therefore recommend buying the vignette in good time before crossing the border.
